Month on Internet
MOT is a good@ss seggsy monday to friday ass time. All the junk that keeps my head on straight
Month On Internet is a series that isn’t monthly or necessarily even connected to the internet. It’s a round-up of stuff stuck in my head since the last one. Music, TV, skate videos - e.g. the junk that keeps my head screwed on straight. Stuff I hate. People I am trying to suck up to.
I’m gonna fill up the rest of the links later; I can’t watch supreme clips on the job, guys!
I’m starting this one behind a desk at my temp job. It’s weird to think we’re at the height of summer because it feels like the slowest week of the year. July 4th has always calmed me down, often due to the depressive results of day-drinking, but this one was a bit of a banger. I saw some good old friends, went out to some good old spots, and met a bunch of really cool people. The mundanity of the whole thing also reminds me of Funny Ha Ha, or maybe Hannah Takes The Stairs.
Cum Town’s revamp is well underway, though it still may be a joke: The last few episodes since Stavros left the podcast to do… whatever comics do have been a project. I think Adam’s alt-comedy roots and urbane connections are going to bash against Nick’s stupid racist fanbase and… well, nothing new is going to happen. Not looking forward to Wardell on Ion but I hope he talks about VFILES. Honor Levy is a lolcow, for fuck’s sake. They’re trying to turn her in Chris-chan over there. It’s all been done.
John Cardiel did a front-board on a Supreme-branded parking block: Antihero, skateboarding’s corporate-monied glamper company with the good board shapes, has released its umpteenth collaboration with Supreme. In turn, we got a Bill Strobeck clip where TJ and Julien and Cards and Kader are all on the sesh. It’s easy to forget that Kader was a little Antihero fan like 3 years ago now that he’s back smith front heeling out picnic tables, but everybody evolves. Cardiel had a debilitating accident some time ago that wrecked his motor-function, so seeing him front board a curb made my eyes well up. There isn’t a ton of Julien footy which I imagine is because we don’t have any nice ledges in this dogshit city.
In the blogosphere: Ion dad pod, Crumps followed me (remind me to email him), Luke O’Neil left Substack for Ghost and a Substack guy wrote a long thing about how it made him sad, I think I’m gonna submit to Hard Times/Hard Drive because a girl I met in college just got on at Reductress and I’m jealous. Ed's been helping me understand the crypto crash.
In nightlife: It turns out I don’t like techno as much as I thought I did: I went and saw Physical Therapy with all the homies and it was rad and Nowadays is great and I stayed until 4:00 but I just like house better. Techno, you feel it in your body and your bones but it don’t hit the same. Unless there’s breaks.
In gaming: The gear mod that lets you wear dunks and baggy jeans in PC skate sim Skater XL has been updated for the release version of the game. Previously, XLGM and its jorts and high top Chuck Taylors were confined to an older version, with buggy animations and all that. I have been real stoked on it lately, fakeskating around in Chris Milic and Deedz fits. Lot of Discord time to get it working, which I don’t like, but this is the direction internet communities like game modding are going in. It makes everything ephemeral, and I worry Skater XL won’t have the staying power of a Fallout New Vegas or a Skyrim because all the mods’ll disappear.
Barry season 3 was brilliant. Almost too good to even mention, y’know? But it’s all about cycles of trauma and whatnot and the industry and it’s real funny, you get me? Sarah Goldberg better sweep this award season. Who is she even up against? Snook? Damn. Anyway, what the fuck happened to Bill Hader at SNL? Like did they beat him or something?
One way to make money in a band is track placements on bad TV shows and another is merch. Thankfully, Euphoria has on-average like 30 needle-drops an episode (literally sounds unwatchable) and unfortunately venues love to steal money from bands. The more unaffordable touring is, the worse bands that come to your city are going to be, and you’re gonna have to get into really good local music which is just hardcore and dance music. And then everybody’s gonna know you at Trans-Pecos and you’re gonna be in a meme. You should sub to Luke O’Neil. He’s a drunk from Boston with a distinct writing style.
Speaking of bands, did anybody get that unhinged Phoebe Bridgers IG ad for her show in Prospect Park? Where she’s doing that rushed, descriptive TikTok voice about how her ex-boyfriend’s warehouse is right by the show and he got divorced and she put his DMs in the ad? That reminded me of that tweet about how Taylor Swift doesn’t have any songs about sucking dick. Sorry. Dating is terrible for women, it’s really hard.
Uh, also, I read that gawker girl’s articles and it’s just fluff about the royal family. Where is the important stuff, like did Julia Fox actually relapse or did Azealia miss, would I actually get a line as an extra in Peter Vack’s new movie, how off the team is Le Dive, is it cool to be a trans woman again now that people are more open about how jealous they are of us them, is it okay to skate someone’s house, what color wheels should I be skating, is 24 a lame age to be learning a ton of tricks, what is wrong with Taylor Lorenz, who keeps making these strange insane losers who are really good at writing stories, why can’t I write a story to save my life, should I get an MFA. The real questions, y’know. I want answers.
Do not read angelicism or anything like that. Do not read any faceless (ugly) writer. Read Crumps. Watch Crumps talk to these artists and innovators and hacks and losers everyone with good tattoos wants to talk to you about at bars. He’s not just a party writer. He’s looking for answers. Is it possible to hate your brother so much you become transphobic? Or is babyshit to not expect criticism because of how hawd you and all your fwends worked on your speshal film? Mullen-doing-Tucker voice* What is happening in the Nazi Web 3 space? Where is the transgressive art and how was it on adult swim six years ago but nowhere to be found with this Thiel money? Crumps is working towards the answers. Not exactly, but it’s good stuff and I’m always stoked to see him in my inbox. And his paywall is retroactive, which is a cool thing I haven’t really seen outside of like, Legion of Skanks, maybe?
In the words of the dumber Ion, “He’s Crumps, and you can’t take that away from him.”
