Look I love getting mad at women as much as the next guy but come on
In Canada they like to give things to artists. The Polaris Music Awards Wikipedia page looks like peak /mu/. It looks like me, summer 2015, walking around Tompkins at 7:58 AM, watching Billy Rohan noseslide a fridge he dragged out. “As I'm gettin' older, chip up on my shoulder/Rollin' through life, you roll over and die.” But I digress. They only have so many artists in Canada. Birdhouse pro rider (of sorts) and Freddy Got Fingered auteur Tom Green was one of the country’s first charting rappers. When people peed their pants over Grimes getting $90,000 from a government-backed org last year, they neglected to consider that sure, Elon Musk is the father of her child (children?), but Grimes is like the 20th white Canadian to make world-shifting music ever. Also it was just her label trying to squeeze money out of Canadian radio, I think. And the org has backed good bands like Alvvays. Because there’s no way that broad has time to sit down grant-writing; she seems to be unable to remember to eat or wash herself.
In the United States, we do not give anything to artists. There’s nuance to it, sure. Basically, our most important musicians tour until they die.
We have a bunch of ballooning burgeoning industries that have boring email jobs where you can make a bunch of money. Like product management.
